A Winter Meditation

For this month’s Journal, I thought it would be nice to send you a Winter Meditation which I wrote recently for my yoga sessions on Winter Themes. It’s my favourite season of the year. I hope you enjoy.

❄️

Find a comfortable sitting or lying down position. Maybe close your eyes or have a low soft gaze. Settle into your normal breath. Breathing in and out gently. Adjust your position for comfort if you need to and again, settle into your breath.

When you feel ready, draw your awareness to your body, notice where you might be holding on to tension or feeling a little uncomfortable. Adjust for your comfort.

Bring your awareness to your breath again. Inhaling and exhaling in your own time and to your own rhythm. Just noticing your breath as you begin to feel calm and relaxed. When your mind wanders, let your thoughts flow past as you bring your awareness back to your breath. This is your time.

As you keep your eyes closed or your low soft gaze, imagine that you are in your safe, warm, winter cabin, sitting by a glowing log fire. You are on your sofa, supported by soft pillows and snuggled in fluffy warm clothes, cozy socks warming your feet. A soft blanket shelters you from any draft you may feel. Your candles give a soft glow to the cabin. Breathing gently, noticing how you serene you are feeling. Your mind begins to calm, your shoulders soften and relax away from your ears.

Gazing out of the window, you see that the snow had fallen over night, soft soft snow, covering the gardens, sprinkled on the branches of the trees. A perfect Winter scene. The air of winter silence nourishes your soul. You take time to watch each snowflake still falling gently, glistening in the morning light, each as individual and unique as each other, just as you are unique and special. A reminder of all that is wonderful in your life.

You sense your forehead begin to soften, then your jaw as you begin to smile, letting your worries and concerns float away with each descending snowflake. Take a deep breath in and a long deep breath out whilst you enjoy the stillness of the Winter scene outside. Your mind is calm and you sense a moment of pure calmness and serenity allowing yourself to be completely embodied in this moment.

As you gaze outside, you realise how the pure white snow illuminates the vibrancy of the red berries on the trees around the gardens. How amazing that nature continues to provide for the birds in the cold depths of Winter. A gentle reminder of the strength and positivity of your own inner light, shining through even in the most challenging times, radiating compassion to your True Self and illuminating the love in those around us.

Taking a moment or two to return to your breath, as you bring your awareness back to your body and the room you are in, lifting your gaze. Winter… a time to embrace its tranquillity, to rest and nourish your soul, ready for the seasons ahead.
